Before a round begins, each player is dealt a set of cards. These cards can be face up or down, depending on the game. A player who is not allowed to discard his or her cards is said to be in the lead.

At the end of the round, the players who have not folded are able to see their cards. The person with the highest poker hand is the winner of the pot.
